Upcoming Classes: Last fall I started teaching classes from my home(a 100+ year old Victorian!) in the near West End of Richmond, Virginia. The classes are small and we have a lot of fun! If you see something below that interests you, please e-mail me, or call me at 918-0179!

Sign up for my mailing list to receive notices of future classes and lectures.

I am also available to teach for guilds and other groups; just contact me for more information.

Hand Dyeing Made Easy!
      October 16, 2004, 9AM - Noon

Learn the basic procedures involved in dyeing cotton using fiber reactive dyes and leave class with 24 handdyed fat quarters. The technique I teach is not especially messy or difficult, so that it seems almost magical! I provide all dyes, chemicals, and fabric. See more fabric examples on my page of handdyed fabrics.

Class fee: $50 includes 24 PFD (prepared for dyeing) fat quarters of quilt cottons, *all* dyes and chemicals, and most of the necessary equipment (measuring cups and spoons, buckets, etc.).

Students need to bring: a set of 12 pint canning jars *or* 12 gladware-type containers with lids (approx. 16 oz size), a box to carry the jars or containers in, rubber gloves, dust mask or handkerchief (these dyes and chemicals are less toxic than Clorox, but I teach caution when working with them). Containers used for dyeing should NEVER be used for food again. I will provide you with containers for an additional fee of $5 (but let me know in advance that you need them).

Experimenting with Dyeing:
      November 13, 2004, 2 to 5PM

Learn how to dye color gradations and shades from one color to another, and play with various techniques to achieve fascinating visual textures in your dyed fabrics.

Class fee: $40 includes 4 yards of PFD (prepared for dyeing) quilt cottons to dye as you choose, *all* dyes and chemicals, and most of the necessary equipment (measuring cups and spoons, buckets, etc.).

Students need to bring: rubber gloves, dust mask or handkerchief (these dyes and chemicals are less toxic than Clorox, but I teach caution when working with them).

Studio Dye Days!
      October 16, 2004, 2 to 5PM
      November 13, 2004, 9AM to Noon

Many of my students have expressed an interest in continuing their experiments with dyeing but don't have the space at home to do so. This open studio session will allow people to "do their own thing." Students should be familiar with basic dyeing techniques, preferably taken one of my other dyeing classes.

Class fee: $25 includes 6 premixed bottles of dye (either 1 quart or 24 oz squirt bottles) in your choice of colors to use while you're here (I will keep any leftovers); bucket of washing soda water for presoaking and post-fixing; a flat pan for working in; assorted clothespins, rubber bands, etc.; and my expertise and assistance as needed.

Optional: Pre-washed PFD fabric can be purchased for $4-6/yard (depending on fabric); additional bottles of dye $1.50 each.

Students need to bring: rubber gloves, containers, plastic bags, newspaper, stamping or clamping devices, etc., as desired.

Piecing a Mariner's Compass Block -
Date TBA
The Mariner's Compass block looks like a piecer's nightmare: all those points! But it's really quite simple, once you see how to lay it out and put it together. Students in my class will learn about some of the pitfalls to avoid in selecting fabrics for a compass as well as the techniques needed to successfully piece one. Once you've pieced your first compass, you'll see how easy it is to piece even the most complicated ones! This is *not* a paper piecing class. Students will leave class with their compass at least far enough along that they can easily finish it at home. Patterns and templates are provided; sewing machine and/or hand sewing kit required. 3 hour class.
Class fee:$18 includes pattern
Supplies: I will send you a list of supplies when you sign up for the class.

Fabric Postcards Workshop: Date TBA
Based on the book of the same name by Judi Warren; learn how to take a treasured photo or postcard and re-create it in fabric. By the end of the class, your masterpiece should be nearly (if not totally) completed.
Class fee: $30
Supplies: I will send you a list of supplies when you sign up for the class.

Lectures

  Fabric Postcards:
Based on the book of the same name by Judi Warren, this lecture will step you through the process involved in taking a favorite photo or postcard and turning it into a small fabric version. You don't need to be an "artist" to be able to do a small pictorial quilt; you simply need to learn different ways of interpreting the picture and looking at your fabric. Approx. 1 hour.

How to use your handdyed fabrics:
This lecture is a trunk show of both finished quilts and UFOs that incorporate handdyed fabrics in different ways. It's so easy to collect beautiful fabrics and then feel like it's "too pretty to cut". My lecture will hopefully inspire people to get over that fear (especially if you learn how to dye them yourself, so that you can always make more!). Approx. 1 hour.

Tarot Art Quilt Project (slide presentation):
The Tarot Art Quilt Project began as fiber artists from several on-line groups came together to create the entire seventy-eight card tarot deck in quilts. The 42 artists who participated in this project had varying levels of experience with the Tarot, but we each shared in the fascination with this deck of cards. This program presents each of the 78 quilts along with commentary on both the meaning of the card/quilt and the artist's statement. If time allows, I can speak in more detail about the design process I used to create my three Tarot quilts. Approx. 1 - 1 1/2 hours; need room that can be made dark for slide projector and white wall or screen for projecting.
