Four of Wands

Alexandra Wright

Four of WandsCelebrate! Celebrate is my name for this 4 of wands interpretation. I was immediately struck by the fact that unlike the majority of the deck, the traditional interpretations of this card and its reversed meaning are the same.

This card is about prosperity, peace and harmony. I wanted to create a joyful happy card. I used a rainbow of bright colors and free motion appliqué techniques to construct the quilt. "Free motion" work can be loose and playful.

Tarot practitioner, Isabel Radow Kliegman, includes the sharing of one's bounty with others in her interpretation of this card. It is more wonderful to be surrounded by plenty when it is given freely to others as well. My women do not hang back. They come out to meet the viewer.

The Four of Wands often has a prominent canopy of fruits and flowers (held by 4 strong stakes), with 2 figures beneath it. The traditional figures are sometimes seen as a man and woman, sometimes as two women. To me, the canopy also represents the traditional Jewish wedding canopy, or chuppah. My quilt celebrates the committed love of two people, regardless of gender, race or ethnicity. Let us peacefully and joyfully honor love wherever it grows. Hence, my canopy is made of the traditional quilt Double Wedding Ring.
