Before
creating the design for this card, I spent a lot of time
contemplating the meaning of death and trying to understand
it from many perspectives, including my own personal experience
of death. I wanted to create a card that distilled death
to its essential quality, and I knew I wanted to leave
behind the visual metaphor of a dancing skeleton, which
I think is an image lost on many in the modern world.
After all my consideration, I knew that my design must
capture the movement of death, the point of passage from
something to something else. One inspired day, I got part
of the vision for this quilt - the Tao gate - and the
rest came easily.
For the Tao represents the Way, and the Way of Life is
Death, and there is one thing in life that we can *always*
count on - and that is that nothing stays the same. We
are always in a state of flux, and death is as much a
reality of our daily lives as the sun that rises and sets.
This card therefore represents that moment of transition,
the passage from one realm to another, the transformation
from one form to another.
