Ten of Swords

Connie Hester

In "Stabbed in the Back" (The 10 of Swords), I convey the complete emotional destruction of a person who finds herself attacked by others. Her foes, both real and imagined, are coming from all directions. Sacrificed and victimized, the rug pulled out from under her, things can only get better. Labels are included on each sword; such as, degradation, domination, accusation, and rejection. Each represents a deeply hurtful act, but this cycle of negativity is finally coming to a close, and rebirth of the spirit has begun.

By emphasizing the dark side of the emotions with dark fabrics for both the figure and the background, I relied upon the golden swords to outline her figure and to keep from losing it against the dark background. They certainly are difficult to ignore, both visually on this piece and psychologically in real life.

Together with the Christian symbol of rebirth in the lilies, the binding with its pink and green flowers surrounds her with new spring growth, shifting the focus from the present destruction to the fresh start of the future.
