The Tarot Art Quilt Project Deck

The Tarot Art Quilt Project began as fiber artists from several on-line groups came together to create the entire seventy-eight card tarot deck in quilts. The 42 artists who participated in this project had varying levels of experience of the Tarot, but each shared in the fascination with this deck of cards.

The Tarot is an ancient system of symbols that have fascinated people for centuries. They are the ancestors of playing cards, although they are used more for meditation now than for any game. They represent a full view of the human experience, timeless and yet ever changing. The Major Arcana represent the basic external forces and situations of our lives. The Minor Arcana are more the places, people and situations of everyday life. Within the Minor Arcana there are four suits: Cups, Wands, Swords and Pentacles. These represent four different directions that people focus on in their lives.

The 78 quilts each measure 24" x 36" and display a wide variety of quilting techniques, both hand and machine, piecework, appliqué, and embellishment. The artists incorporated some reference to our more traditional quilting roots in their designs. Each artist researched his/her own card and the final art represents the interpretation of the individual artists. The written artists' statements offer intimate glimpses into their lives and studios.
