The
Chariot is a card that has historically meant triumph
or success with an endeavor. I have tried to interpret
this in a new way in which success is seen as a bit of
a "wild ride". Success always brings new challenges.
The horses in my chariot are pulling in different directions,
depicting the way success has the quality of opening new
opportunities and so new dilemmas.
In the traditional card, the Chariot is at rest, but
for me success is not a plateau, but rather the beginning
of a new mountain to climb. I wanted the viewer to be
an active participant, so did not put anyone in the chariot,
or even show the chariot itself. The viewer is in the
driver's seat. I did go with the traditional choice of
no reins controlling the chariot, because in my experience
success is something fraught with both joy and peril.
Reversed, the beasts seem to be falling from a height,
perhaps even diving deliberately towards destruction.
I chose the horses rather than other types of mythical
animals because I have always loved horses and spent many
hours as a child drawing them. The horse to me is a magical
beast as well, even though they are real. My horses are
flying, not merely running headlong towards the sky. Shoot
for the stars and enjoy the ride.
