The
Empress is the Great Mother, the Goddess of Fertility, and
the Grand Matriarch who represents motherhood and domestic
harmony. The blessings of this card include creativity and
consummation, potentials fulfilled, intuition and protection.
The seeding grass or wheat behind her represents the
seeds that have come from the flower, and in this quilt
there is a progression from the flowers on the bottom
to the seed (potential) midway up, and finally to the
birth of the potential as butterflies. These colorful
butterflies that flutter around her head and rest on the
top of her scepter represent the freedom that comes from
the Empress's blessings. It is the freedom to pursue one's
own potential without rules or structure.
The Empress is shown sitting on a throne. Her starry
crown and the butterflies that create a wreath around
her head, represent the free thinking of the creative
mind. The back of the throne is a starry sky and the rays
of her crown represent the signs of the Zodiac. She is
wearing rich elegant robes, and her mid-term pregnancy
is just beginning to show, representing the growth and
impending birth of potential. She is ruled by Venus, and
also represents in marriage, the harmony of true love
on a soul level. Within the protection and loving guidance
of the Empress, one can relax in her arms like a small
child, filled with the joy of her loving abundance.
The Empress was the last of the 3 cards I made for this
project, and the series of my three cards represents my
own process of loss, grieving, and healing after losing
my baby daughter Hanna. The Empress represents the return
to creativity and personal success, after a long journey
through the dark night.
